Hello! I am Rachel Heiser - Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Designation specializing in the treatment of first responders and their families who have experienced different types of trauma. Weather The Storm Counseling and Consultation, LLC was established to specifically serve the first responder community throughout Ohio. My journey as a police wife has given me a firsthand understanding of the unique cultures and challenges that come with being a first responder and first responder family.
I base my practices on trauma-informed care and using evidence-based and strengths-based interventions. I provide my clients with support, guidance, and practical feedback so they can effectively address their treatment goals and life's challenges. I have experience working with clients dealing with post-traumatic stress, dissociation, mood disorders, behavioral concerns, and low self-esteem. I understand that trust is earned and I firmly believe in meeting clients where they are and working collaboratively to help them meet their treatment goals.
I am the proud wife of a Columbus Police Officer and am passionate about working with first responders by mutually creating a calm and accepting environment. I also work with spouses/significant others and family members of first responders as I feel I have a unique perspective in being able to connect and relate to them. I am highly motivated in raising awareness about the importance of mental health care amongst first responders in order to decrease the stigma and provide culturally humble care.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Social Work and Masters of Social Work from The Ohio State University. I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy through EMDRIA (EMDR International Association).
When I am not working, you can find me spending time with my husband, our son, and three fur babies or binge-watching Law and Order: SVU.
As founder of Weather The Storm Counseling and Consultation, LLC I strive to provide culturally competent mental health services which promote individual growth and allows clients to heal and realize their full potential.
What do I mean by "culturally competent?" Being "culturally competent" is having the ability to understand and respect the differences between cultures, and to respond appropriately to those differences. For the first responder community, being "culturally competent" involves understanding the different roles of first responders and that every first responder has their own culture. Understanding the specific mental health needs of first responders is crucial in being able provide the appropriate care. Traditional approaches to mental health treatment may not always be effective for this population, as their experiences and stressors are very distinct. It is essential for mental health professionals to be knowledgeable about the unique challenges faced by first responders in order to offer tailored support.
