Let's be honest: being a first responder is one of the toughest careers one can have. You see and experience things most people will never see in their lifetime. Society relies on first responders to answer calls for help - when people are at their worst. Eventually, that can take a toll on your overall well-being.
As first responders, you are trained to handle emergency situations while keeping your emotions in check. Sometimes you may feel like you're seen, or expected to be, like a robot. You may have been made to feel that taking care of your mental health or acknowledging you need help is a sign of weakness. You may feel that sharing your struggles, whether with your coworkers or family, is a burden. It's hard to remember that you are human and humans experience emotions whether you want to or not. When you hold in your emotions, they will eventually come out and can come out in unhealthy ways (i.e. depression, explosive anger, substance abuse).
It is every first responder's goal to come home safe at the end of the day. However, if you're struggling and holding it in, home may not be as safe of a place as we need it to be. Ask yourself this: Why is it okay to call for help when you're on duty but not okay off duty? I know it sounds like a cliché but there is no shame in asking for help if you are struggling with your mental health.
Therapy is a space where you are allowed to experience and show your emotions without judgement. Emotions can be difficult to understand and process - which is why I am here. Attending therapy gives you an opportunity to explore and process through your trauma, thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behavior while receiving support and guidance. Your well-being and safety is my number one priority.
